Regular hair conditioning helps to maintain clean healthy hair. In some instances, however, conditioning with the wrong products can be harmful to your hair and scalp. This is because some of the products used in manufactured conditioners may damage your hair. Homemade hair treatments are a good alternative to manufactured hair conditioners as they work well on different hair types. There are three reasons why you should use homemade natural treatments on your hair;

  1. They are made of natural ingredients thus chemical free,
  2. You can easily mix them at home with your kitchen leftovers and
  3. They are less expensive compared to manufactured hair treatments.

Over the years I have tried out several natural ingredients on my relaxed hair and the results have been impressive. Below are some of my favourite homemade hair conditioners that have helped repair and nourish my hair, and also heal my flaky scalp.

1. Conditioner for Damaged Hair

Ingredients: Avocado, Eggs and Olive Oil Hair Treatment

Ripe avocado fruit is rich in vitamins, minerals and natural essential oils. When used for hair treatment, the oils moisturize hair and the nutrients nourish it leaving it healthy and strong. Eggs are a rich source of proteins and fats. The yolk nourishes and moisturizes hair. Egg white on the other hand has antibacterial properties that will get rid of unwanted oils and also protect the scalp from any infections. This homemade hair treatment is ideal for repairing damaged hair.

Required

  • 1 medium avocado
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

Direction

  1. Mix egg in a bowl
  2. Blend avocado
  3. Add your egg mix and olive oil to the avocado
  4. Blend until its smooth then pass it through a strainer to remove any waste
  5. Apply the mixture on wet hair, cover with a plastic cap and allow it to sit for 30 minutes
  6. Rinse with shampoo and style as desired

2. Conditioner for Brittle Hair

Ingredients: Banana, Yoghurt and Olive oil Hair Treatment

Bananas are a rich source of potassium and vitamins essential for nourishing hair. Yoghurt on the other hand is rich in protein and also helps in improving moisture balance of the hair. The probiotics in yoghurt helps fight any bacteria in the hair. Extra virgin olive oil is essential natural oil that helps keep your hair moisturized. This natural hair treatment is recommended for conditioning dry brittle hair.

Required

  • 1 Banana
  • ½ a cup yoghurt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Direction

  1. Blend banana
  2. Add yoghurt and olive oil to the mixture and blend further
  3. Sieve the mixture through a strainer to remove any lumps
  4. Apply on clean wet hair, cover with a plastic cap and allow it to sit for 30 minutes
  5. Rinse with shampoo and style as desired

3. Conditioner for Itchy Scalp

Ingredients: Lemon and Olive Oil Hair Treatment

This homemade natural hair treatment is used to treat an itchy scalp. The acid in the fresh lemon juice loosens any dry flakes on the scalp, making it easier to clean the scalp. Lemon has healing properties that help treat scalp infections. Olive oil in turn moisturizes the scalp and nourishes the hair.

Required

  • 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons of water

Direction

  1. Mix all three ingredients
  2. Apply on clean wet hair and generously on the scalp and allow it to sit for 30 minutes
  3. Rinse with shampoo and style as desired

Substitutions

You may substitute olive oil with coconut oil or sesame oil. For bright shiny hair, add apple cider vinegar to your rinse water.

For best results apply your preferred treatment every two weeks.
